41 ordinary people have been arrested today as Insulate Britain’s campaign of civil resistance continues into a second week. [1]

Insulate Britain has written an open letter to the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, asking that the government demonstrates leadership at this time and lives up to its responsibilities to protect people in Britain.

“Public Letter to the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Dear Home Secretary,

We wish to profoundly apologise for the disruption we have caused over past week on the M25 motorway. We cannot imagine undertaking such acts in normal circumstances. But, like you and other Conservatives, we believe that the reality of our situation has to be faced.

The facts are laid out by Sir David King, former chief scientific advisor to the UK government: “We have to move quickly. What we do, I believe, in the next three to four years will determine the future of humanity”.

The collapse of the climate is happening around us, and will soon get worse unless we immediately reduce carbon emissions. We face economic chaos and the breakdown of law and order within a matter of years. We will lose our incomes, pensions, and savings while passing a hellish legacy onto our children. Around the world thousands of millions of people will lose their lives through slaughter and starvation as society collapses.

We plead with you to demonstrate leadership. Ask the Prime Minister to make the statement the country wants to hear - that the government will live up to its responsibilities to protect us. That it will take the lead needed to insulate and retrofit our homes. That it will now take the decisive action required to enable us, as a country, to get on with the job. So hard working families can both feed their children and keep their homes warm and our country is protected and defended.

At this time of national crisis, we have to come together. We deeply appreciate the difficult position you find yourself in at this time. But we hope you will find it within yourself to come and meet with us in open dialogue, not so that we can agree but more that we can understand our differences.

As soon as we have a meaningful statement we can all trust, we will immediately call off the campaign.

That is all we ask.

We apologise again for the disruption and hope to hear your response.

Insulate Britain”

Notes to Editors

[1] Insulate Britain is asking the government to release a meaningful, public statement to insulate the housing stock of the UK by 9pm tonight and disruption to the M25 network will cease.

[2] About Insulate Britain

Insulate Britain is a new campaign group that is calling on the UK government to put in place policy and funding for a national home insulation programme starting with all social housing.

We demand the Prime Minister and the government to #getonwiththejob, face up to their responsibility and lead our country through the climate crisis.

We are ordinary British citizens with simple and achievable demands to #INSULATEBRITAIN

The UK government must immediately promise to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain

We demand a national home insulation strategy that gives British people the justice they deserve: a future for our loved ones, lower energy bills and safer living conditions

We are scared: our livelihoods are at risk and the futures of our children are uncertain

The Climate Crisis is a threat to all: we demand the government to act now

Our Demands

1. That the UK government immediately promises to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025;

2. That the UK government immediately promises to produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fully fund and take responsibility for the full low-energy and low-carbon whole-house retrofit , with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030 as part of a just transition to full decarbonisation of all parts of society and the economy.
